Scaling & Root Planing
These treatments are sometimes collectively called a “deep cleaning,” and they serve as our first line of defense against early-stage gum disease, also known as gingivitis.
For scaling, your hygienist will use an ultrasonic cleaner to break up and clear away plaque or tartar that has accumulated around and underneath your gum line, and then root planing will be used to smooth out the rough surfaces of your teeth’s roots. This will make it harder for plaque to gather on them in the future, decreasing your chances of redeveloping gum disease.
Antibiotic Therapy
After your scaling and root planing treatment, your doctor may choose to utilize antibiotic therapy to guard you against reinfection. This will either come in the form of a topical antibiotic that is applied directly to your gums or a pill you will take at home. In any case, this will kill any leftover bacteria, even those that are hidden deep within your gum line. Afterward, you will be advised to come in more often for regular dental cleanings to prevent your gum disease from coming back.
