The Best Way to Protect Your Lips from the Summer Sun
July 30, 2024
As summer sets in and temperatures begin to rise, people are forced to deal with all kinds of new health concerns. Staying cool and hydrated becomes increasingly important when the weather is hot, but that’s not the only thing to consider—there are also components of your oral health that you might want to think about this summer.
For example, keeping your lips moisturized isn’t just aesthetically important. It’s also an important aspect of protecting your oral health in general. Here are a few of the things that could happen to your lips this summer, why protecting them is important, and what you can do in that regard.
Why Do I Need to Protect My Lips?
As you’re probably aware, one of the main health concerns that can arise in the summer is skin cancer. Spending time in the sun can be a massive problem if you aren’t protecting yourself, which is why most people are well aware of how important it is to use sunscreen when they spend a lot of time outside. At the very least, people will make an effort to shade themselves or cover up when they’re outside.
The lips are often overlooked in this regard. However, they’re actually just as susceptible to sunburn and skin cancer as any other part of the body. This is compounded by how thin the skin on the lips is, which often makes it much easier for them to be damaged after very mild exposure to UV rays.
If you’re interested in preventing painful sunburn or the chances of skin cancer, it’s just as important to protect your lips as any other part of your body.
How to Protect Your Lips from the Sun
Thankfully, it isn’t all that difficult to keep your lips in good condition this summer. The main thing you ought to do is to invest in a lip balm with SPF protection, something you can find at any pharmacy at grocery store. Higher SPF protection tends to better, but there’s no need to go that far out of your way to find it—something with SPF 30 or higher should be able to sufficiently protect you.
